right after a short break on loco records, the polish duo of producers karol xvii & mb valence return to present a series of eps entitled sessions. there are currently two episodes ready to come out: day session, and night session with a consequent vinyl release called session.

the record opens up with the poisonous title-track “two scorpios”, where sharp analogue leads lean on a relentless disco-funk groove, thrusting us out straight against the sweaty walls of the chicago’s muzic box. the airy and enchanting spirals of “solenoid” create a detachment for a sonic trip through circling arpeggios and sparkles. on the flip side, we reconnect abyssy to the “young soulomon” of early 90’s by a warm and robotics dusty house. the mood turns definitely more freaky with “slomo kid”: sampling divertissement with a punkish flavour and emphatic rhythmics, it is the perfect tune to shake down the whole ball of wax.

last year saw casablanca-based cosmo records launch its most ambitious project todate, celebrating five years of cross-cultural collaboration. the three vinyl releasesfeatured producers such as san proper, radiq, pier bucci and dandy jack working with moroccan musicians to create a true fusion between modern electronics and ancient traditions. the purpose of cosmo has always been to find a natural meeting place between thesedistinct musical forms, bringing out the best strengths of each practice through real time spent together in the studio, where each artist can truly understand the other in a shared quest for sonic harmony. as such, this latest release marks a step forward in exploring this idea through a new series entitled cosmo jam. as the title suggests, the focus here is on live improvisation. in late 2014 parisian producers masomenos and vadim svoboda travelled to morocco and set up their equipment at the coda casablanca music center. they were joined by m’hamed el menjra playing bass, abdessamad boussahfa on violin and sanhaji on darbuka, and the ensuing jam sessions between these musicians now make their way on to vinyl. no editing or post-production took place – the music you hear on the record was created entirely in the moment. each track highlights the magic of a different instrument – on “be” menjra’s double bass comes twisting through effects processing and subtle distortion, meeting with a low-slung broken beat groove from the visiting french producers. sanhaji’s thrilling percussive flair on the darbuka flirts perfectly with the crisp programming of drums and bass on the uptempo “kaled” and the more laid-back “petit”. boussahfa’s violin makes for some of the most arresting moments on the release, meeting with intricate minimalist rhythms on “mon” and shining in the heart-rending ambience of “frere”. presented across two 12”s, this collection of six tracks tells a most honest account of how gifted artists from entirely different disciplines can find a common ground and create something truly unique. without any studio trickery to hide behind, this is the concept of cosmo records laid bare, and the results prove it is a concept worth exploring further.

larry and bell are two musos from the east and west of the atlantic, who met on a scuba trip in belize in 99. larry plays bongos, bell is on the organic sampler and echo pedal, and a local cast of musicians backed them up on guitar, double bass, and kick drum. after a few rum daiquiris and many spliff, these are the sessions whittled down to strictly the best of hits.

groove line records follows up the change remix 12” from the summer with the latest instalment of our officially licensed disco remix 12”s. next up are two exceptional disco remixes of the salsoul orchestra classics, “tale of three cities” and “tangerine”, by mike maurro, whose recent the mike maurro peak hour remixes box set has cemented the new york producer’s reputation as one of the most respected disco remixers on the scene right now. side a features “tale of three cities” (mike maurro disco remix), one of the salsoul orchestra’s funkiest cuts, written by bass player ron baker for their debut lp. maurro extends the arrangement to nine minutes, concentrating on the driving beat and rhythm section for the intro, subtly adding the guitar and keyboard parts before the first orchestral bridge at 1m36. stripping back much of the orchestral elements throughout the mix he gives more space to the deftly executed solo guitar and keyboard passages and gives special attention to vincent montana’s vibes, taking the dancer on a beautiful journey through the salsoul sound concluding with an instrumental, ethereal outro. side aa features “tangerine” (mike maurro disco remix), vincent montana’s skillfully rearranged version of the lilting jimmy dorsey pop standard which was the group’s biggest pop hit, also from their debut lp.

limited repress due to high demand on requests. eating records was born in the brussels underground scene, inspired by the idea of synthesizing two different horizons to get a beautiful concept. in the beginning it was simply the need to go back to roots and try to connect with the present and future, but eventually it ended up with a modern groovy label. the first release of the label was not that easy to find. the eclectic worlds of the two members did not really help them. but that was until they found jr from dallas - a talented dj producer from lille, owner of gourmand music recording - maybe food is the key... who knows ? jr has always been a forward-moving artist, but his music cannot - and should not - be mapped linearly. after releasing on labels as farris wheel recordings and greenhouse recordings, he had nowhere to go but backward for his new ep on eating records to its 90 old school beats and hypnotizing basses. phonical deep is gorgeous and evocative all the same. technival is stylish enough, and it is as restlessly creative as you would expect. it is followed by the hypnotic and beautiful remix of jay bliss of phonical deep - the eps final track. the fact is, jay bliss has managed to create something so refreshingly unique that trying to categorize and label his remix is rather dubious. he transformed the original melodic part to a blissful pad embellished with a repetitive rhythm spiced with tiny subtle details. it is easier to see this remix as the backbone of electronic music - simple and repetitive but never boring.

giammarco orsini kicked off heko records last year with the first volume of experiential learning, and now hes back for round two following a brief spot on elephant moon earlier in the year. solar system is vital to the planet dominates the a side in a swinging, punchy style of techno that calls to mind the likes of stephen brown. life goes on on the flip however comes on with a housier demeanour, keeping the detroit synth tones plush and the mood mellow. trees dance breaks away into a stripped back electro style that sits as a neat foil to the grooving 4/4 elsewhere on the ep.

repress 2016 .. ukrainian artist io is the next to make his mark on one records with mir, including two intricate and sophisticated, rolling dance floor tracks of the highest quality. on remix duty, the profoundly talented cab drivers showcase their unique production style, as they too are warmly welcomed to the label.

fausto’s burnel ep is the result of a collaboration between two brussels based labels called le pacifique records & unknown references. the pacifique side, comes complete with fausto’s trademark experimental house sounds and a remix from aidons antoine. on the flip, wan voager & lbnhrx take things deeper, darker and more twisted.

fortuna records have gone all out and reissued one of the most insane, far out records to have ever come out of lebanon. originally released in 1980, raja zahr’s “drum sequence” is a ‘get crazy’, experimental disco monster, utilizing middle eastern percussion and analog synthesisers, so mind boggling they would keep any dancefloor begging for more. and there is more. two additional tracks of lebanese percussion madness by raja make this an essential triple banger previously known only to serious collectors with cash to burn. meticulously remastered for club use and approved by mr zahr himself, this crispy 12” is one for the freaks. so go on then.
